A House Republican who is one of the most vocal dissenters against the House’s mask mandate said Thursday he tested positive for coronavirus – the latest breakthrough case in a Capitol already roiled by the resurgence of the virus.

Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) said in a statement that he tested positive Thursday afternoon after “experiencing minor symptoms” in the morning.

Norman said he is fully vaccinated and that, as of Thursday, his symptoms “remain mild,” adding that he will quarantine and work virtually for the next 10 days.

Norman protested both the original mask mandate for the House chamber and one imposed late last month in response to new guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

He was hit with a $500 fine for repeatedly refusing to mask up on the House floor in May, which he unsuccessfully appealed, noting public health officials said at the time “fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear a mask.”

Norman told Forbes last month he does not believe it is necessary for him to wear a mask on the floor because “I’ve been vaccinated,” comparing the mask fines to requiring members to “dye our hair and wear blue socks.”
