A bipartisan panel of Washington state lawmakers formally condemned recent political violence, including the murder of Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman and assassination attempts on Donald Trump, as efforts to “undermine our democratic process.” The Joint Select Committee on Civic Health unanimously approved the statement Wednesday.
“Disagreements should not translate to violence,” the panel stated. “Political violence, against anyone, is never justified.”
The condemnation follows the June 14 killing of Hortman and her husband, and injuries sustained by Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman and his wife. It also referenced two failed assassination attempts on Trump last year during his presidential campaign.
Committee member Rep. Dan Bronoske (D-Lakewood) said the message was clear: “We can’t revert to targeted assassinations of anyone involved in politics.”
The committee, chaired by Lt. Gov. Denny Heck (D), urged greater civility and cross-party dialogue. Members discussed inviting the National Institute for Civil Discourse to help lawmakers become “ambassadors” for respectful political engagement.
The U.S. House also passed a resolution Wednesday condemning the Minnesota attacks.
