The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to hear an appeal from conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, leaving intact the $1.4 billion in damages he owes to families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims. The decision marks a major defeat for Jones, whose years-long legal and financial battles have pushed his media empire toward collapse.

Jones falsely claimed the 2012 massacre in Newtown, Connecticut — which killed 26 people, including 20 children — was a government hoax. His comments led to years of harassment against the victims’ families. In 2022, a Connecticut jury ordered him to pay more than $960 million, followed by an additional $473 million in punitive damages and $49.3 million from a separate Texas case.

The Supreme Court did not provide a reason for rejecting the appeal, consistent with standard practice. The ruling brings the families one step closer to collecting what they are owed after years of bankruptcy proceedings.
