Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Rep. John James (R-MI) warned of rising threats at the U.S.-Canada border during a panel in Detroit hosted by the conservative group America’s Future Tour. Noem argued that “many” transnational gang members are entering through the north as enforcement has tightened at the southern border under Donald Trump.

She singled out Detroit’s Ambassador Bridge as a potential risk point and claimed Canada is failing to stop smugglers. However, U.S. Customs and Border Protection data shows illegal crossings at the northern border make up less than 0.5% of all national encounters.

Critics pushed back. Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Mallory McMorrow called the rhetoric “security theater,” accusing the Trump administration of using fear to drive social media engagement, not genuine policy.

Meanwhile, the LA Press Club and Status Coup announced a lawsuit against DHS, accusing officials of targeting journalists during recent immigration protests in Los Angeles.
