The US Census Bureau announced that the global population is set to reach 8,019,876,189 as of January 1, 2024. This marks a 1% increase, adding 75,162,541 people since the start of 2023. However, the report highlights a trend of decelerating growth rates worldwide. The estimated rate of global population increase now stands at 4.3 births and two deaths per second.

In the United States, the population growth rate was 0.53%, amounting to an increase of 1.7 million people, totaling 335.8 million. This slow growth trend could lead the 2020s to record the lowest decade growth rate in US history, potentially surpassing the Great Depression’s record of 7.3%.

The fertility rate in the US is expected to stabilize at one birth every nine seconds and one death every 9.5 seconds. Additionally, net international migration is projected to contribute one person to the US population every 28.3 seconds. Overall, the US population is growing by one person approximately every 24.2 seconds.

Globally, the peak of population growth occurred in the 1960s, and the rate has been on a decline since. The world reached 8 billion people in November 2022, 11 years after hitting the 7 billion mark. The Census Bureau projects that it will take 14 years to reach 9 billion and another 16.4 years to hit 10 billion. This slowing trend coincides with a drop in global life expectancy to 71 years in 2021, influenced partly by the COVID-19 pandemic.
