Zohran Mamdani’s decisive win in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary is prompting establishment reactions that closely mirror the Democratic Party’s response to Bernie Sanders in 2016. A Jacobin analysis from that year detailed how party leaders and big-money donors consolidated early behind Hillary Clinton, sidelining Sanders despite his record-breaking small-dollar fundraising. Nearly a decade later, Axios quotes Wall Street executives warning that Mamdani’s democratic‑socialist platform could trigger capital flight, calling his rise “terrifying” and likening the moment to progressive victories in Chicago and Boston.

Mamdani also faces overt Islamophobic attacks from right‑wing commentators. The Independent quotes conservative activist Laura Loomer declaring, “If the Muslim Brotherhood had been designated as a terrorist org, @ZohranKMamdani could have been prevented from running for office,” and warning, “Get ready for Muslims to start committing jihad all over New York.” Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk likewise invoked the 2001 terror attacks, suggesting Mamdani’s rise foreshadows “another 9/11.” Adding context, Sen. Bernie Sanders—who is Jewish and faced establishment blowback in 2016—has endorsed Mamdani, showing the cross-faith coalition backing his campaign.

While both campaigns highlight grassroots enthusiasm and skepticism from party elites and major media, Mamdani’s experience adds a religious and racial dimension to the pattern, showing how insurgent progressives continue to meet unified resistance from political, financial, and media power centers.
