Gerrymandering is a practice intended to establish an unfair political advantage for a particular party or group by manipulating the boundaries of electoral districts… it’s almost always a corruption of the democratic process.

In 2015, 70% of Ohioans approved a constitutional reform specifically to stop gerrymandering in the state’s General Assembly. But last week, the Ohio Redistricting Commission approved new maps that lock in veto-proof power for both chambers of the General Assembly.

Considering those two facts, at least one civil liberties organization thinks this is illegal. “Not only is this a brazen abuse of power, but it’s a clear violation of the Ohio Constitution. That’s why we’re going to court.” The lawsuit was filed Thursday on behalf of the League of Women Voters. President of the Ohio chapter, Jen Miller, says, “gerrymandering is… insidious… it harms every Ohioan, regardless of where they live or how they vote.”

Aaron Mulvey, a spokesperson for Republican House Speaker and Commission Co-Chair Robert Cupp, said in a statement to The Hill, “Lawsuits happen.”
