WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia supplied Iran with Shahed drones that were later used in attacks against U.S. military bases and regional targets in the Middle East.
In an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, Zelensky said Ukraine has evidence that Russia transferred drones built under Iranian license that were later deployed by Iran’s government. “I have 100 percent facts that the Iranian regime used these drones against American bases and against neighbors in the Middle East,” Zelensky said.
Russia has relied heavily on Shahed drones during its war against Ukraine, using them widely in attacks since launching its full-scale invasion in 2022. The drones have become a central element of Moscow’s strategy to strike infrastructure and military positions.
The claims come as tensions remain high following U.S. and Israeli military operations targeting Iran beginning Feb. 28. Iranian forces have launched retaliatory drone and missile attacks across the region.
President Donald Trump recently suggested Russian President Vladimir Putin “might be helping” Iran militarily, while noting that Russia could view U.S. support for Ukraine in a similar way.
According to the Pentagon, at least 13 U.S. service members have been killed and roughly 140 wounded since the conflict began. The Defense Department also confirmed six additional American service members died Thursday in a KC-135 refueling aircraft crash in western Iraq.
