Health policy researchers from Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania warn that Donald Trump‘s sweeping federal budget proposal—dubbed the “big, beautiful bill”—could result in over 51,000 deaths annually if passed. The letter, addressed to Senate Democrats Ron Wyden and Bernie Sanders, cited projected consequences of Medicaid cuts, Medicare subsidy rollbacks, and deregulated nursing home staffing.
The bill, already passed by the House, would eliminate healthcare coverage for 7.7 million people through Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act, causing an estimated 11,300 deaths annually. Repealing the Medicare Savings Program would add 18,200 more deaths due to reduced access to subsidized medications. Removing nursing home staffing standards could cost another 13,000 lives.
“This isn’t hypothetical,” said Dr. Alison Galvani of Yale. “These cuts would disproportionately harm the most vulnerable communities.”
The research used peer-reviewed data and Congressional Budget Office projections. Despite bipartisan concern, the bill remains a top legislative priority for the Trump administration.
