Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday warned that “trade war and tariff war will produce no winner,” as he called for nations to uphold a multilateral trading system and preserve global supply chain stability. The remarks, made in an article published in China and Vietnam during Xi’s state visit, appeared to indirectly criticize President Donald Trump without naming him.
Xi’s comments come days after Trump imposed 145% tariffs on Chinese imports, prompting Beijing to raise its retaliatory duties to 125%. Trump has since paused most tariffs for other countries, but kept China excluded and hinted Sunday that new levies on semiconductor chips could come within a week.
“Protectionism will lead nowhere,” Xi wrote, positioning China as a stable and cooperative trading partner in contrast to the U.S.’s escalating trade tactics.
Analysts say Xi is attempting to frame China as a responsible superpower while Trump’s shifting trade policy creates uncertainty for global markets.
