Elon Musk’s platform X (formerly Twitter) is taking steps to entirely remove the pronoun feature from user profiles, a functionality introduced in 2021 aimed at enhancing representation for users to display their preferred pronouns. This move aligns with Musk’s publicly known stance against the personal choice of pronouns, marking a shift from Twitter’s previous efforts to support LGBTQ+ inclusivity through features like pronoun display and policies against deadnaming and misgendering.

The pronoun option, which was in development and not widely available before Musk’s acquisition, is now being erased from the platform’s systems. This decision reflects Musk’s critique of what he perceives as “woke ideology,” despite the feature’s intention to allow individuals control over their identity representation. The removal is seen as a step back in terms of progressiveness on the platform, potentially impacting its appeal to advertisers and users supportive of inclusivity measures.

However, a precedent in Brazil, where X was legally mandated to revise its deadnaming policy, suggests that similar external pressures might compel the platform to reintroduce or maintain such inclusivity features, despite Musk’s personal views.
