Detainees and attorneys are raising alarms about harsh and unsanitary conditions at a new immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades, just days after Donald Trump toured the facility with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” the site opened July 2 on a remote airstrip surrounded by swamp.

Immigration lawyers and family members describe sewage-flooded floors, food with worms, days without showers, limited medical access, and no attorney visits. “They eat once a day and have two minutes to eat. The meals have worms,” said the wife of one Cuban detainee, who is a legal U.S. resident. Her husband, a father of a U.S. citizen child, reportedly joined a hunger strike Thursday to protest the conditions.

Officials from the Florida Division of Emergency Management deny the allegations, stating the facility “meets all required standards.” However, media access has been restricted, and a group of Democratic lawmakers filed suit for entry. A site visit is scheduled for July 12.

Despite claims that it holds the “worst of the worst,” attorneys report that detainees include non-criminals and at least one minor, raising serious due process and constitutional concerns.

How come no one ever mentions the attacks of the mosquitos? I just stayed there one night and was overwhelmed by them. They are endemic to the everglades. No one would ever be able to sleep there, if they weren’t protected by screens or mosquito repellant.

I saw no evidence of screens in the pictures of those migrant wards. Sleepless nights will be enough to kill those people. Trump would be the criminal.
