Veteran journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein criticized The Washington Post‘s decision not to endorse a candidate for the 2024 election, arguing it contradicts the outlet’s investigative findings on former President Donald Trump. Speaking to CNN’s Brian Stelter, they expressed disappointment, noting the timing just 11 days before the election and the paper’s strong reporting on “the threat Donald Trump poses to democracy.”

Under owner Jeff Bezos, The Post initially planned to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, but Bezos reportedly reversed this decision. As a result, editor-at-large Robert Kagan resigned, while former executive editor Marty Baron denounced the move on X, calling it “cowardice,” and suggesting it could invite further intimidation from Trump.

This marks the first time in 36 years that The Post has not endorsed a presidential candidate, a decision that has led to some reader cancellations.
