The Wisconsin Supreme Court has suspended Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan following her arrest on federal charges of helping a man evade immigration authorities. Dugan was taken into custody by the FBI Friday and faces charges of obstruction and concealing an individual to prevent arrest.
In a two-page order, the state’s high court said it acted on its own initiative to uphold public confidence in the judiciary. The court’s liberal majority voted 4-3 to suspend Dugan from her official duties while proceedings are ongoing.
Dugan allegedly escorted Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, an undocumented immigrant, and his lawyer through a restricted jury door after learning Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were in the courthouse to arrest him. An FBI affidavit describes Dugan as visibly angry and confrontational toward agents.
Flores-Ruiz was later detained. Dugan has been released and is scheduled for arraignment May 15.
The arrest has drawn backlash from Democrats, who argue the Trump administration is targeting judges. Protesters gathered outside the FBI’s Milwaukee office Saturday.
