Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said Friday he is “not afraid” after Trump’s top border adviser, Tom Homan, suggested Evers could be prosecuted for obstruction due to guidance given to state workers regarding ICE encounters.
Evers released a video defending the memo, which advised state employees to seek legal counsel before complying with ICE requests and to avoid turning over files without legal review. “I haven’t broken the law,” he said. “I will not stop doing the right thing.”
Homan claimed that “knowingly harboring and concealing an illegal alien” is a felony and warned, “Wait to see what’s coming.” Some Republicans seized on the moment; state Rep. Calvin Callahan shared an altered image of Evers in handcuffs.
Evers called the reaction a “fake controversy” and said the memo’s intent was to ensure employees follow the law while protecting their rights. Similar guidelines have been issued in other states, including Connecticut.
