Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer expressed strong disapproval Thursday over Donald Trump‘s remarks that he is considering pardons for the men convicted in the 2020 plot to kidnap her. In an interview with WOOD-TV, Whitmer said she was “very disappointed” that Trump would even entertain the idea.
Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr. were convicted in 2022 of conspiring to kidnap Whitmer and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. The plot was foiled after undercover FBI agents posed as arms dealers. Trump, speaking at the White House, said he would “look at it,” calling the trials a “railroad job.”
Whitmer urged Trump to unequivocally denounce political violence. “When the president was shot at in Pennsylvania, I was one of the first to condemn it,” she said. “We have to condemn political violence no matter who it is aimed at.”
Trump pardon attorney Ed Martin has also signaled support for clemency, calling the men “victims just like Jan. 6.” Whitmer said she plans to formally express her opposition to the White House.
