A self-described “whites-only” organization known as Return to the Land (RTTL) is seeking to expand from its 160-acre base in northern Arkansas to an area outside Springfield, Missouri, according to a new report. Critics, including civil rights groups and Missouri Democrats, have denounced the group as racist and antisemitic.
RTTL co-founder Eric Orwoll told KOLR that the group aims to create communities that exclude people of color and Jews, based on what he called “shared ancestral values.” He claimed RTTL is a private membership association coordinating homeschool networks, health care, and legal services exclusively for white Americans.
Missouri Democrats condemned the initiative. State Rep. Jeremy Dean said such groups are “emboldened by politicians who attack marginalized communities.” State Rep. Betsy Fogle warned against allowing “history to repeat itself.” Missouri Democratic Party spokesperson Chelsea Rodriguez called RTTL a “hate group” that would not be welcomed.
Civil rights advocates, including the Anti-Defamation League, say the group may violate the Fair Housing Act and Arkansas state law. Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin said the allegations raise constitutional concerns and are under review.
Orwoll denies the group promotes hate and insists it operates legally under private association laws. RTTL does not sell real estate and claims it is exempt from housing regulations.
