The White House announced Tuesday that it will use tariff revenue to temporarily fund the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) as the government shutdown nears its second week. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on X that President Donald Trump had found a “creative solution” to prevent low-income mothers and children from losing access to food assistance.
“The Trump White House will not allow impoverished mothers and their babies to go hungry because of the Democrats’ political games,” Leavitt wrote.
It remains unclear how much tariff revenue will be reallocated or whether the move can proceed without congressional approval. The WIC program, which provides food vouchers and formula to millions of families, was set to run out of funds within days after Congress failed to pass new spending bills.
Democrats have repeatedly blocked the GOP’s stopgap funding measure, insisting it include an extension of Affordable Care Act premium tax credits set to expire this year.
