The White House on Saturday shared an AI-generated image on its official account depicting President Donald Trump dressed as the pope, days after he joked, “I’d like to be pope.” The image, originally posted on Truth Social, shows Trump in papal robes and a coronation chair, pointing outward with a crucifix around his neck.
The post comes just a week after Trump attended the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome—his first foreign trip during his second term—and ahead of the May 7 conclave where cardinals will elect the next pontiff. While Trump told reporters he had “no preference” on who should succeed Francis, he quipped that he himself would be his “number one choice.”
The AI image has sparked backlash on social media. Some Trump supporters found it disrespectful, especially so soon after Pope Francis’ death. One user commented, “God will not be mocked. Not a wise decision.”
Francis was widely seen as Trump’s ideological opposite, emphasizing humility and compassion for the marginalized. The meme has also raised concerns amid reports of alt-right interest in influencing the papal succession.
