White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday that President Donald Trump might “consider” awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Edward “Big Balls” Coristine, a former member of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and current Social Security Administration employee.
Coristine, 19, was attacked with his girlfriend during an attempted carjacking in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 3. Trump deployed federal law enforcement to patrol the city after the incident, alleging crime was “out of control.”
Data from the Metropolitan Police Department shows violent crime has declined since 2023, reaching its lowest rate per 100,000 residents since before the pandemic. However, an MPD commander was placed on leave this year amid allegations of crime data manipulation.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene praised Coristine as a “HERO,” while Trump has called for juveniles in the attack to be tried as adults. Federal agents from the FBI, DEA, and other agencies are expected to remain in the city for at least several days.
