The White House said Tuesday that no classified material was shared in a leaked Signal group chat where senior Trump administration officials discussed U.S. military strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said “no ‘war plans’ were discussed” and that officials are allowed to share such information publicly if it’s unclassified.

The comments followed The Atlantic’s report by editor Jeffrey Goldberg, who was mistakenly added to a chat with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and others. Goldberg said Hegseth shared operational details like targets and timing ahead of strikes on March 15.

Leavitt emphasized that the National Security Council is reviewing how Goldberg was added and said the strikes were “successful and effective.”

The messages also showed officials criticizing European allies. Vance and Hegseth mocked “freeloading,” while Stephen Miller suggested demanding repayment from Europe and Egypt.

Former CIA Director Leon Panetta called the leak “a serious mistake,” but Trump officials insist no national security laws were violated.
