The White House and Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Jaime Harrison responded to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ claims that the Democratic Party has distanced itself from working-class Americans, which Sanders suggested contributed to the party’s loss of the White House and Senate. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “We respectfully disagree with the senator,” citing President Biden’s job creation and pro-union efforts, adding he’s “the most pro-union president.”
Harrison rejected Sanders’ remarks as “straight up BS” on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing Biden’s policies supporting workers, such as saving union pensions, creating millions of jobs, and advocating for child tax credits. Harrison argued these efforts addressed issues crucial to working families, including wage growth and homeownership.
Sanders issued a strong post-election critique, blaming “big money interests and well-paid consultants” within the Democratic Party for its loss of working-class support. He cited economic inequality, high healthcare costs, and support for the Gaza conflict as key issues. Sanders supported Vice President Harris in her campaign and described her as progressive despite her shift to the center. However, his critique has triggered internal Democratic debate as the party assesses its Election Day losses and contemplates future strategies.
