The White House on Monday dismissed rumors that President Trump is considering a 90-day pause on his sweeping tariff policy as “fake news,” following a brief stock market surge triggered by the speculation.
“Wrong. Fake News,” the official White House account posted on X in response to a report that Trump might suspend tariffs for most countries except China. A White House official confirmed to The Hill that the claim was inaccurate.
The rumor originated from a social media post misinterpreting an interview with National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett. When asked on Fox News if Trump might consider a pause, Hassett replied, “The president is going to decide what the president is going to decide,” without offering a clear answer.
The speculation caused stocks to briefly spike before reversing, as hopes of a tariff reprieve faded. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened down more than 1,500 points on Monday, after shedding nearly 4,000 points in the prior two trading sessions.
