The White House on Thursday declined to take a position on the newly introduced Dignity Act of 2025 but reiterated that President Donald Trump “will not support amnesty.” Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump had not yet reviewed the legislation and was currently focused on other bills, including the GENIUS Act and rescissions efforts.

The Dignity Act, introduced Tuesday by Reps. Veronica Escobar (D-TX) and Maria Salazar (R-FL), is a revamped immigration proposal that offers legal status—but not citizenship—to undocumented immigrants who have been in the U.S. for more than seven years. The bill would also boost border security and bar businesses from employing undocumented workers.

Leavitt twice emphasized that Trump remains firmly against “amnesty for illegal aliens in any way.” Still, Trump has previously acknowledged the dependence of certain industries—like agriculture and hospitality—on undocumented labor, though his stance has varied.

Supporters say the bill provides a path to lawful stability without handouts. “No handouts. No shortcuts. Just accountability,” Salazar said in a statement. The bill has ten Republican co-sponsors, which could be enough to pass the House with unified Democratic backing.
