White House officials and President Biden’s allies criticized The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday following the publication of a report titled “Behind Closed Doors, Biden Shows Signs of Slipping.” The report, based on interviews with 45 people, included accounts from both Democrats and Republicans who observed Biden in private meetings, but it largely cited Republican officials, including former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

White House aides shared a segment from MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” where host Joe Scarborough denounced the Journal story as a hit piece. Scarborough praised Biden’s handling of international affairs and bipartisan legislation, contrasting it favorably with other leaders.

The Journal article mentioned instances of Biden reading from notes in meetings about Ukraine aid, deferring questions to aides, speaking softly, or closing his eyes. While most critical comments came from Republicans, some Democrats also noted his age in several interactions.

McCarthy, who criticized Biden’s current performance, had previously praised him for being “very professional, very smart.” This contradiction was highlighted by White House communications director Ben LaBolt on social media, pointing out the inconsistency in McCarthy’s statements.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), who was interviewed for the piece but not quoted, emphasized Biden’s engagement and leadership in a January meeting on Ukraine, questioning why her positive comments were excluded. Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez defended Biden’s strategic leadership and effectiveness.

The Wall Street Journal stood by its reporting. This story is the latest in a series questioning Biden’s fitness for office as he seeks a second term. At 81, Biden would be 86 at the end of a potential second term, prompting ongoing scrutiny about his age and capability.

Republicans, including former President Trump, have long portrayed Biden as unfit for office. However, Democrats counter by noting Trump’s own age, 77, and his verbal stumbles. Biden himself dismissed concerns about his age, asserting his capability in a recent interview with Time magazine.
