Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) criticized Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), the Republican vice presidential candidate, for saying that school shootings are a “fact of life” following a fatal shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia that left four people dead. Warnock expressed frustration, saying such violence is a unique issue to America, calling it a form of “American exceptionalism.”
Vance, speaking at a campaign rally after the shooting, advocated for enhanced school security and acknowledged the grim reality of school shootings, stating, “We don’t have to like the reality… but it is the reality we live in.”
Warnock argued that Americans must question why such incidents happen predominantly in the U.S., emphasizing, “It’s the guns.” He urged for universal background checks and criticized politicians tied to the gun lobby, stating they prioritize financial interests over children’s safety.
Vance, calling the shooting an “awful tragedy,” was criticized for his remarks, but his campaign said the media misrepresented his comments. The Associated Press later updated a story that had initially mischaracterized Vance’s statements. Vance’s campaign also took aim at Vice President Kamala Harris for her stance on police in schools, accusing her of endangering students.
