Vice President JD Vance said Sunday that California has “way more” House seats than it should because illegal immigrants are included in congressional apportionment counts. Speaking on Fox News, Vance argued that counting undocumented residents gives California unfair political power and federal resources.
“California gets rewarded for welcoming illegal aliens… asking taxpayers of states like Ohio to subsidize them,” he said, adding that the result leaves other states with fewer representatives.
President Trump has ordered a mid-decade census that will exclude undocumented immigrants, deviating from the U.S. Census Bureau’s standard of counting all residents. The next full census was not scheduled until 2030.
Vance called for Republicans to pursue aggressive redistricting to counter what he described as blue-state advantages. His remarks come amid fierce redistricting battles ahead of the 2026 midterms, with Republicans in Texas seeking five new GOP-leaning seats and Democrats in California planning a ballot measure to favor their party.
Dozens of Texas Democrats fled the state last week to block the GOP plan, prompting threats of arrest from Gov. Greg Abbott and legal action from Attorney General Ken Paxton.
