Vice President Harris has chosen Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate for the November election against Donald Trump, according to two sources familiar with the decision.
Walz, 60, emerged as a surprising contender amid speculation over other high-profile names like Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly. His profile rose significantly after a viral interview where he criticized some Republicans as “weird,” a tactic adopted by national Democrats.
Walz’s liberal credentials and appeal as a safer choice compared to other contenders, who faced scrutiny from the left, bolstered his selection. Shapiro faced backlash over his response to pro-Palestinian protests, while both he and Kelly were criticized by union leaders.
Walz’s Midwestern roots add to his appeal, as Trump targets flipping Minnesota. Despite Biden’s 2020 win by 7 points and a Republican presidential loss streak of over 50 years in the state, Trump and his running mate JD Vance have intensified their campaign efforts there.
