WASHINGTON, D.C. — A majority of American voters say President Donald Trump’s use of presidential power has gone too far, according to a new national poll released as his second term approaches its first full year.
The Quinnipiac University poll found that 54 percent of registered voters believe Trump is overreaching his authority, while 37 percent say he is handling presidential power about right. Just 7 percent said he has not gone far enough. The findings reflect growing public unease with the scope and speed of executive actions taken early in Trump’s second term.
Since returning to office, Trump has used executive authority to impose new tariffs on foreign trade partners, sharply reduce the federal workforce across multiple agencies, and approve major changes to the White House complex, including the demolition of the East Wing to make way for a ballroom. Quinnipiac polling analyst Tim Malloy said the results suggest voters are increasingly concerned about how aggressively presidential power is being exercised.
The survey also showed weakening support for Trump across several policy areas. Fifty-five percent of voters disapprove of his handling of trade, while 54 percent disapprove of his immigration policies. On foreign policy, 54 percent also expressed disapproval, compared with 41 percent approval.
Economic anxiety remains high, with 64 percent of respondents calling the cost of living a “very serious problem.” The poll surveyed 1,035 registered voters between Dec. 11 and Dec. 15, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
