Vietnam is prepared to negotiate the removal of all import tariffs on U.S. goods and is requesting a delay to President Trump’s newly announced 46% tariff on Vietnamese imports, a senior official said Sunday.
Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh conveyed the offer during a meeting with U.S. Ambassador Marc Knapper, according to a government release. Thanh said Hanoi is ready to reduce its own tariffs to zero and called for a postponement of the U.S. levy “to create an environment conducive for the two sides’ tax negotiations.”
Vietnam’s Communist Party leader To Lam has reportedly sent a special envoy to Washington and requested a 45-day delay beyond the April 9 implementation date, as part of ongoing discussions.
President Trump confirmed the talks in a Truth Social post Friday, stating he had a “very productive call” with Lam, who expressed interest in a tariff reduction agreement.
Trump’s baseline 10% tariffs began Saturday, with the higher 46% rate on Vietnamese goods set to take effect April 9.
