Vice President J.D. Vance met Friday with Alice Weidel, leader of Germany’s far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, making him the highest-ranking U.S. official to do so. The meeting occurred at the Munich Security Conference, where Vance also met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, CDU leader Friedrich Merz, and earlier in the week, Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
During his speech in Munich, Vance criticized European leaders for censoring populist movements, accusing them of using terms like “misinformation” to suppress opposing views.
Tech billionaire Elon Musk, a top adviser to President Trump, has also faced criticism for supporting AfD. Last month, Musk appeared at an AfD rally and defended Germany’s history, drawing accusations of election interference. He previously wrote an op-ed backing AfD, which Vance shared online, though the vice president later denied endorsing the party.
