Vice President Vance defended President Trump’s decision to issue pardons to approximately 1,500 individuals charged in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, including those accused of assaulting law enforcement officers.

In a CBS Face the Nation interview, host Margaret Brennan pressed Vance on the pardons, pointing out his previous stance that violence on Jan. 6 should disqualify individuals from pardons. Vance deflected, claiming his remarks had been mischaracterized and highlighted “gray areas” in the prosecutions.

Vance accused the Department of Justice (DOJ) under Merrick Garland of denying constitutional rights, imposing double standards, and engaging in politically motivated prosecutions. “We rectified a wrong, and I stand by it,” Vance said, emphasizing the decision was based on concerns over due process, not condoning rioters’ actions.

Trump’s sweeping pardons included roughly 600 defendants accused of resisting or assaulting police officers.
