The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) has condemned former President Donald Trump for “politicking” during a visit to Arlington National Cemetery’s Section 60, where veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are buried. IAVA CEO Allison Jaslow criticized Trump for turning a sacred space into a political venue, stating that Arlington should remain free from politics.
Trump attended a wreath-laying ceremony on Monday to honor soldiers who died in the 2021 Kabul airport attack. Despite warnings from a cemetery official, his campaign took photos and videos in Section 60, later using the footage in a TikTok video with partisan commentary.
The incident sparked backlash from veterans and former Trump administration members, including Alyssa Farah Griffin, who called the video “disgraceful.” Trump’s campaign spokesperson denied any wrongdoing, claiming they had permission from one family to film. However, other families did not consent, leading to further criticism.
Trump has faced criticism from veterans in the past, including for remarks about Senator John McCain and Medal of Honor recipients.
