U.S. Vice President JD Vance met with Pope Leo XIV on Monday as the Vatican signals interest in brokering peace talks in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Vance, a Catholic convert, led the U.S. delegation to the inaugural Mass of Leo, the first American pope. Also present was Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Leo, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost of Chicago, spent decades as a missionary in Peru. He has pledged to support peace efforts and humanitarian outreach in Ukraine. The Vatican, previously sidelined in early war diplomacy, is offering to host future talks and assist with prisoner exchanges and child reunifications.
Vance also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Leo had previously criticized Trump administration deportation plans, a point of friction with Vance during earlier meetings with Pope Francis.
Donald Trump is expected to hold separate calls with Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy later Monday.
