As President-elect Donald Trump prepares for inauguration, he has vowed to pardon individuals charged in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot. Vice President-elect J.D. Vance clarified the criteria on Fox News Sunday: “Peaceful protesters treated unfairly by Merrick Garland’s DOJ should be pardoned. Those committing violence should not.”
Approximately 1,600 individuals have faced charges ranging from trespassing to battery. The Jan. 6 Committee, now disbanded, remains divided on Trump’s actions, with Trump maintaining he “didn’t do anything wrong.” He criticized committee members, suggesting they “should go to jail.”
Special prosecutor Jack Smith recently dismissed a case against Trump related to Jan. 6, which emerged after Trump’s reelection announcement. Increased security marked this year’s Jan. 6 certification, but the day passed without incident.
