Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador on Thursday, after U.S. courts determined the Maryland man was wrongfully deported. The meeting came amid a legal and diplomatic standoff with the Trump administration, which has refused to bring Abrego Garcia back to the United States despite a Supreme Court order.

“I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance,” Van Hollen posted on X. He added that he had relayed a message of love to Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer.

Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele posted mocking commentary alongside photos of the meeting, writing that Abrego Garcia was “sipping margaritas” with the senator and would remain in Salvadoran custody. The administration, which is paying El Salvador to detain deportees, has refused to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return despite a Supreme Court ruling and repeated orders from lower courts.

Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national, was granted asylum protections in 2019 due to threats from gangs. He was nonetheless deported in March under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act — a law the administration is using to justify mass deportations to El Salvador and Venezuela.
