Postmaster General Louis DeJoy informed Congress on Thursday that the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will eliminate 10,000 jobs within 30 days through a voluntary early retirement program, aiming to reduce costs at the financially struggling agency.
The retirement program, announced January 13, is part of broader efforts to address the USPS’s $10 billion loss for the 2024 fiscal year. The agency employs approximately 635,000 people.
DeJoy also revealed that the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is now partnering with USPS. He confirmed signing an agreement with the General Services Administration and DOGE to identify further cost-cutting measures.
The move is viewed as an attempt to align with DOGE’s efficiency initiatives, a source told CBS News. DeJoy, who was appointed under Trump, has announced plans to step down, though the White House has not yet nominated a successor.
