The Biden administration announced plans to recognize a new Syrian government that opposes terrorism, destroys chemical weapons, and ensures rights for minorities and women. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized a commitment to aiding Syria’s transition following the collapse of President Bashar Assad’s regime, which fell after rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took control. HTS has been a U.S.-designated terrorist organization since 2012, but discussions with the group may occur if it addresses the reasons for its designation.

Blinken called for an inclusive process driven by Syrians, stressing that other nations should avoid interference. He pledged U.S. support for humanitarian aid and preventing Syria from becoming a terrorism hub.

Rep. Mike Waltz, Trump’s national security adviser pick, stated HTS’s actions will be closely monitored, including their treatment of former Assad officials and handling of ISIS detainees. The U.S. continues targeting ISIS remnants and backing Israel’s operations in Syria.

The White House defended Israel’s strikes on Syrian military and chemical weapons sites. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified the seizure of a Golan Heights buffer zone as necessary for Israeli security. Critics, including Turkey and Egypt, condemned the move. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan will visit Israel for discussions on Syria and efforts to secure a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza.
