U.S. officials have not determined who was behind an apparent cyber attack on the social media platform X that disrupted access for thousands of users, according to a Trump administration official familiar with the investigation.

A senior official described the Monday outage as a cyber attack but noted that no intelligence had been gathered identifying the perpetrator. Speaking anonymously, the official emphasized that the administration takes cyber threats against American businesses seriously.

Elon Musk, the owner of X and an adviser to President Donald Trump, claimed on Fox Business Network that the attack had “IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area.” However, cybersecurity experts caution that this does not necessarily indicate the attack originated from Ukraine.

Musk, who also leads Tesla, has faced scrutiny over his role in the Trump administration’s government reduction efforts. Tesla stock fell 15% Monday, its largest drop since 2020. Trump later voiced support for Musk, stating he would purchase a Tesla to demonstrate confidence in the CEO.
