A Connecticut physician born in the United States says she was mistakenly sent an email by federal immigration authorities ordering her to leave the country immediately.
Dr. Lisa Anderson, 58, of Cromwell, Connecticut, told NBC Connecticut that she received a message from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stating, “It is time for you to leave the United States.” Anderson, who was born in Pennsylvania, is a U.S. citizen and said the message was threatening and alarming.
A senior DHS official told NBC News the notices were intended for individuals without lawful status in the country. However, if a recipient used a shared or non-personal email address that was also linked to a U.S. citizen, such notices may have been misdirected. Officials said these instances would be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Anderson is now carrying her passport at all times and consulting an immigration attorney. “It does make me concerned there’re a lot more people out there like me who probably also thought this was spam,” she said.
