The Trump administration is facing a lawsuit over its decision to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), with unions calling the move “unconstitutional and illegal.” The lawsuit, filed Thursday in D.C. on behalf of the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) and the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), argues that placing most of USAID’s workforce on administrative leave has created a global humanitarian crisis, cost thousands of American jobs, and jeopardized U.S. national security.
The suit names President Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as defendants, asserting that none of their actions received congressional approval. Critics warn that halting USAID operations will disrupt food aid, medical clinics, and refugee programs worldwide.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk, leading the administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has defended the cuts, calling USAID corrupt and wasteful. USAID employees are set to be placed on leave by Friday night.
