A coalition of labor unions filed an emergency motion Friday in federal court in Maryland seeking to block the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing sensitive Social Security data of millions of Americans.

The lawsuit, led by Democracy Forward, argues that DOGE has demanded unrestricted access to Social Security Administration (SSA) databases without explaining why it needs the information. Tiffany Flick, a former senior SSA official, warned in a court affidavit that DOGE’s involvement “threatens the security” of Americans’ personal data.

DOGE’s cost-cutting efforts under Elon Musk have faced nearly two dozen lawsuits, with judges raising concerns about its lack of transparency. The Trump administration has justified DOGE’s government-wide access to databases, including Treasury and IRS systems, as an effort to eliminate fraud and waste.

Meanwhile, mass layoffs and office closures at SSA are raising fears about the impact on Social Security benefits. A federal judge in Washington declined to block DOGE’s access to Treasury systems on Friday but acknowledged the privacy risks.

The SSA has not yet responded to the lawsuit.
