British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves said Wednesday that the United Kingdom will not “rush” into a trade deal with President Trump over tariffs, but confirmed discussions are ongoing to reduce trade barriers. “We want to get the right deal that’s in our national interest,” Reeves told reporters, according to Reuters.
The talks follow Trump’s 90-day pause on “reciprocal” tariffs. While tariffs on the U.K. are expected to be lower than those placed on other nations, Reeves said she still finds the current structure unsatisfactory. “I want to see tariff and non-tariff barriers reduced between the U.K. and the U.S., but also with other countries around the world,” she told the BBC.
Reeves is set to meet with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent this week to discuss terms. Tensions remain, with British officials warning that a trade war would hurt both countries. Prime Minister Keir Starmer continues efforts to strengthen U.S.-U.K. trade ties before further tariffs take effect.
