United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain criticized President Donald Trump’s executive order eliminating union rights for many federal workers, calling the move “deplorable” during an interview on CBS News’s Face the Nation Sunday.

The executive order, signed over the weekend, blocks numerous federal agency employees from unionizing and restricts the government’s ability to engage in collective bargaining. It affects employees across various departments, including Homeland Security, Defense, Veterans Affairs, Treasury, and others.

Fain, who previously campaigned against Trump, voiced strong disapproval of the order despite supporting Trump’s recent decision to impose tariffs on foreign-made cars. “It’s deplorable what happened last night with the stroke of a marker, stripping away bargaining, stripping away contractual rights,” he said.

While acknowledging that tariffs could help bring jobs back to the U.S., Fain said he values both labor-friendly policies and manufacturing growth. “We support a president that supports organized labor and good working conditions,” he added.

Trump’s order claims national security as justification for targeting unions, though many affected agencies have little or no direct link to national defense.
