Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Wednesday that the U.S. will begin revoking visas from select Chinese international students, especially those with links to the Chinese Communist Party or enrolled in “critical fields.” The action, taken under Donald Trump’s directive, is the latest in a string of foreign student restrictions.
Rubio said the State Department and DHS will also revise visa criteria and intensify scrutiny of all future applicants from China and Hong Kong. The announcement came alongside an internal State Department order halting the scheduling of new student visa interviews, as officials prepare to expand social media vetting.
China accounts for over 270,000 international students in the U.S., about a quarter of the total. The decision follows Republican concerns about Chinese access to federally funded research and national security threats.
President Trump also called for a 15% cap on foreign student enrollment at elite universities like Harvard, where international students make up over 25%. Harvard is already battling a DHS move to strip it of its ability to enroll international students, a case now in court.
