The U.S. will impose a 104% tariff on imports from China starting at 12:01 a.m. EST Wednesday, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. The move follows a Monday Truth Social post from Trump threatening additional tariffs after Beijing announced a 34% import fee on American goods.

Trump had already announced a 34% tariff on Chinese imports, prompting China to respond with its own measures. He also said the U.S. would halt all trade negotiations with China, though talks with other nations would continue.

Leavitt said tariffs on about 90 countries were intended to bring partners to the table. She claimed 70 nations had already begun talks to reduce their assigned tariff rates in exchange for concessions benefiting American workers.

China’s commerce ministry warned it would “fight to the end” if the U.S. didn’t reverse its actions.

Trump’s administration maintains the tariffs are necessary to promote domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign goods.
