The U.S. is set to announce a new $400 million military aid package for Ukraine, marking the third tranche of aid since Congress passed supplemental funding in late April. The package includes High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, rockets, artillery, air defense and anti-tank munitions, armored vehicles, and other weapons and equipment. The aid will be provided through presidential drawdown authority, which allows for quick deployment from existing U.S. stockpiles.
This follows the Pentagon’s announcement of a $1 billion weapons package and a subsequent $6 billion package funded through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative after President Joe Biden signed a $95 billion foreign aid package.
The latest package’s contents have not been fully disclosed, but it may include more long-range ballistic missiles, known as the Army Tactical Missile System, which Ukraine has requested repeatedly. These missiles would nearly double Ukraine’s striking distance to up to 300 kilometers (190 miles).
