On Monday, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy urged social media platforms to include health warnings for younger users. “It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents,” Murthy wrote in an op-ed for The New York Times.
Murthy’s call follows last year’s advisory from his office highlighting the potential negative impacts of social media on teenage mental health. He previously urged social media companies to prioritize safety and privacy in their designs and enforce minimum age requirements.
