The U.S. government has revoked Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s visa following remarks he made at a pro-Palestine protest in New York City during the United Nations General Assembly.
At the protest Friday, Petro urged U.S. soldiers to “disobey the orders of [President] Trump” and not point their weapons at civilians, saying they should instead “obey the orders of humanity.” The State Department called his comments “reckless and incendiary” and announced the visa revocation shortly afterward.
Petro, who returned to Bogotá on Saturday, denounced the decision as a violation of the diplomatic immunity granted to heads of state attending the UN. He argued his visa was pulled because of his assertion that Israel’s war in Gaza constitutes “genocide,” claiming the move shows the U.S. is disregarding international law.
Petro stood alongside Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters at the protest. Colombia’s Interior Minister Armando Benedetti defended Petro, saying he was among the few leaders willing to denounce the war on Palestinians at the UN.
The visa action follows a recent State Department decision to bar some members of the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization from UN events.
