The United States experienced its largest immigration surge in history under President Biden, with an annual net migration of 2.4 million people from 2021 to 2023, according to a Congressional Budget Office report cited by The New York Times. This surge brings the administration’s total net migration to a likely 8 million people, the highest over any three-year period in U.S. history and, proportionally, the most significant influx in nearly 175 years.
Immigration and border security remain key political issues, with Republicans heavily criticizing the Biden administration’s policies. President-elect Donald Trump has pledged aggressive immigration reforms, including what his aide Stephen Miller described as “the largest deportation operation in American history.” Miller outlined these plans on Fox News, emphasizing executive orders to secure the border.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), incoming chair of the Senate Budget Committee, called for a border security bill as the new Congress’s first legislative priority. Graham wrote on the social platform X that the measure would be transformative and fully funded, aligning with his focus on addressing the “broken border.”
